Leh History / History Ladakh

Till 17th century, Ladakh was ruled by King Sengge Namgyal and was prone to frequent attacks by the Kashmiri Muslim. When Leh was accorded the status of regional capital, it soon flourished into a prosperous town with a market on the famous Silk Route. It is said that in 1920s and 1930s, the vibrant bazaar, still present used to receive camel -trains and a dozen pony every day.

Stok Palace, about 200 yrs old, once served as the residence of the banished royal family. The palace consists of a museum where one can get a glimpse of the rare jewelries, tankhyas displaying the life history of the Sakya Muni Buddha. There are several fascinating objects which include Armour, seals, weapons and a whole lot more.
